Selected from over 24,000 nominations received by the Pearson Teaching Awards in 2013, 62 celebrations are taking place in schools across England, Northern Ireland and Wales on 17 May 2013 to present prestigious Regional Teaching Awards to outstanding local heroes of education.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching. Founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, they recognize the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach.

For the first time Dr McHugh was truly speechless as the staff at the College had successfully kept his win a secret for a painstaking 4 weeks! The assembly he delivered was abruptly brought to a close with the arrival of the award from a delighted Mrs Karen Duncan who stealthily hid it in her handbag!

Dr McHugh has been involved in the development of Slemish College since its inception and opening in 1996. A passionate advocate for Integrated education, he has worked tirelessly to provide a world class, innovative and caring school which provides opportunities for students of all abilities, religious identity and social backgrounds. Through his own professional development and personal vision, he has promoted the close partnerships of parents, governors, staff and students - as well as developing a range of links and associations with partner agencies. HIs vision is of a world class school which is focused on high quality pastoral care, innovative teaching and learning, and promotion of an inclusive ethos.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, president of the Teaching Awards said, ‘I am genuinely proud and honoured to be the president of the Teaching Awards. I owe so much of what I’ve done to my fantastic teachers at school and university and it is exciting to join in celebrating what is probably the most important profession of them all.’

Dr McHugh will now join fellow winners at the UK final of the Teaching Awards on 20th October, filmed in London and broadcast by the BBC.

Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK said: "We want to recognise and support inspirational teachers, for their commitment to teaching and learning and improving the life chances of the next generation. It’s really important that we create opportunities to say thank you."
